When students think about writing a thesis or dissertation topic, usually a graduate program comes to mind as the place where such a project would be assigned. However, more and more undergraduate programs, such as those in the humanities, social sciences, and business, are requiring dissertations, theses, or capstone projects that encompass all of a student's learning experiences during his or her course of study.
Following Dissertation Guidelines

Before deciding on a topic, it is extremely important for undergraduates who had to complete a dissertation or capstone project to understand the project's guidelines. Not following the assignment's requirements could cost a student his or her privilege of graduating on time.
First, look at the nature of the project. Is it strictly analytical? Is it a creative project? Will the student be required to simulate a situation and support the outcome with evidence? Considering these aspects will help a student find a topic.



A dissertation or capstone project is not the time to pick and choose which guidelines a student will or will not follow. Follow all rules and requirements as closely as possible, and if a student feels the need to deviate from the project's requirements, then he or she should consult his or her dissertation or capstone project advisor before going ahead with it.

Choosing a Dissertation Topic

Just like topics for other projects, a dissertation topic should not be so narrow that a student cannot find adequate information on the subject or cannot fulfil the length requirement. However, the topic should not be broad enough that the student is not able to give the subject enough attention in order to analyze the situation or demonstrate acquired skills effectively.
Since a dissertation or capstone project is a project in which a student is going to invest a lot of time, the student should also be genuinely interested or have a valid reason for picking the topic, such as planning further study or having a career in that particular area.

Time Management

When writing a dissertation or capstone project, it is vitally important to set aside enough time during each day or week in order to give the project enough time to do it justice. If not, a student's grade and performance on the project may not accurately reflect the skills learned during his or her college career and may jeopardize a student's chance of graduating.
The easiest way to manage time is to set bench marks for the student to accomplish each week. Unfortunately, sometimes students may have to work on projects over school breaks, so a student will have to budget accordingly and make sure that ample progress is made each week. A student should also set aside time for editing, peer and advisor reviews, and preparing for a defense or presentation if it is required as part of the project.

Writing an undergraduate dissertation or completing a capstone project does not have to be a daunting, impossible task. With some planning and consideration, a student can further enrich his or her learning experience by supplementing information learned in the classroom and through other experiences throughout a college career.
